Biological membranes
Passive diffusion across membranes
Small, uncharged molecules can cross the hydrophobic lipid bilayer by passive diffusion. The ability of drug canditates to pass the lipid bilayer is an importanat parameter in drug design. Using memLAYER to immobilize liposomes with the membrane composition that matches your test system you can measure the passive diffusion of various samll molecules such as glycerol, urea and hydroxyurea.

Lipid bilayer formation and integrity
The artificial biomembrane, supported or tethered to a surface is a molecular film with very high structural integrity. Impedance measurements are therefore a common method to characterize the build-up process and interactions of such membranes. The quality and constitution of the membrane is directly reflected by the surface capacitance. With the z-LAB technology the build-up process of a supported or tethered biomembrane on gold, silicon dioxide or titanium surfaces and its interactions can be studied in real-time.
