Membrane proteins

Membrane protein mediated transfer across membranes

Specific Membrane Transporter Proteins strictly regulate the biosignaling and transfer of metabolites that occurs across cellular membranes. In life science, functional characterization of these transporters constitute is of great importance due to the fundamental role of the transporters in cells.  More than 50% of the drug targets are membrane protein and the study of transport across membranes is a necessary component in drug target analysis, in screening drug uptake and in establishing the potential side effects which drug candidates can have on essential membrane transporter/channel proteins such as e.g. hERG. The Layerlab methodology has successfully been used to investigate transfer through melittin pores and aquaporin pores.

Membrane protein functionallity

Membrane proteins mediate the contact between the interior and exterior of cells. Often, these membrane proteins are strictly regulated by interactions of specific effector molecules and one of the major approaches in drug design is to develop drugs that can interact and inhibit some specific membrane protein. The use of the Layerlab methodology in G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) interaction studies is currently under investigation together with Bio-Rad.
